Staff Full Stack Engineer

Staff Full Stack Engineer for Robots & Pencils. One opening. Remote US role; start date ASAP. Includes in-person interview and one-week onboarding, expenses covered. Compensation: $155,000-$230,000. This is a senior-most, high-ownership full-stack engineering role for an architect-caliber builder who can define technical strategy and build across React/TypeScript, Python/Node.js, and production AI integrations. The role includes front-end architecture, polished demo-ready experiences, backend/API architecture, real-time channel integrations across chat, voice, and web, and AI service integration.

Responsibilities include defining front-end architecture and standards, building scalable UI systems in React/Angular/Next.js/TypeScript, leading backend development and API architecture, designing channel integrations across Slack, Teams, SMS, Twilio, PSTN, and web, implementing real-time messaging and webhook pipelines, designing efficient database schemas, driving performance/reliability/security, leading monitoring and observability, integrating LLM APIs, streaming, tool/function calling, multi-step agent flows and RAG, and mentoring engineers.

7+ years professional software engineering experience leading complex full-stack initiatives. Deep proficiency in React or Angular; strong JavaScript and TypeScript including React, Angular, and Next.js. Strong state management and modern CSS/build tooling experience. Strong backend experience in Python and Node.js with API architecture expertise. Hands-on channel integration experience across chat (Slack, Teams, SMS), voice (Twilio, PSTN), and web. Strong testing practices: unit, integration, and UI testing. Deep expertise in relational and NoSQL databases, caching, and query optimization. Strong experience with microservices, event-driven systems, message queues, cloud platforms, container orchestration, and CI/CD. Production AI service integration experience: LLM APIs, streaming, tool calling, multi-agent flows, and RAG. Ability to build fast, high-fidelity demos/prototypes, collaborate with design partners/Figma, mentor engineers, and use AI-forward tools such as Claude and Cursor day to day.
